An iced flat white is an espresso forward type of iced coffee drink that originated in Australia. It is made using espresso, steamed milk, and ice.
The typical ratio for a flat white is 1:2, meaning 1 part coffee to 2 parts milk.
The espresso and steamed milk are combined to create a creamy and delicious base for the iced coffee. The mixture is poured over ice to make the drink cold and refreshing.

While the espresso is brewing, froth your milk using a steamer or frothing pitcher. Read further down to explore different ways to froth milk.

Once the espresso is finished brewing, add it to a coffee mug filled with ice.
- Hint: If you want to ice your coffee without diluting it, then use coffee ice cubes instead. They’re simple to make. Read more about it below.

Recipe Variations and Add-ins
Now that you know how to make a basic iced flat white, feel free to get creative and experiment with different variations of the recipe.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
-Add flavor syrups: Vanilla, hazelnut , caramel, and chocolate are all great choices!
-Try using cold brew coffee instead of espresso for a less intense flavor
-Add some whipped cream on top for an extra indulgent treat
-Spice it up by sprinkling in some cinnamon or nutmeg
The important thing to remember is that it’s your drink, make it however you want to make it!
How to Make Coffee Ice Cubes
If you want to make iced coffee without diluting it, then you need to use coffee ice cubes!
They’re simple to make and only require two ingredients:
- Fresh brewed coffee
- Ice cube tray
Start by brewing a pot of coffee using your preferred method. Once it is finished brewing, let it cool down for a few minutes, then pour the coffee into an ice cube tray and place it in the freezer.
Let the coffee freeze for several hours or overnight. Once it is frozen solid, pop out the cubes and add them to your iced drink of choice!
The coffee cubes will help keep your drink cold without watering it down. It’s a win-win!
How to Froth Milk Without an Espresso Machine
If you don’t have an espresso machine, that’s no problem! There are several other ways to froth milk.
Here are a few methods:
Note: Before using any of the methods below, you first need to heat the milk.
- Microwave method: Pour milk into a microwave-safe bowl or cup and heat it for 30-45 seconds until it is hot but not boiling.
- Stovetop method: Pour milk into a saucepan over medium heat. Heat the milk until it is hot but not boiling, then remove it from the heat.
Whisking
Pour your warm milk in a bowl and, if you need the exercise, whisk like nobody’s business, or just use a handheld mixer until it is frothy.
A back-and-forth motion is easier than a circular one. The froth created using this method is slightly better quality than the jar method (which we talk about next).
The handheld electric mixer yields a better froth than whisking by hand.
Shake in a Jar
Pour the milk into a jar with a lid that fits snugly, like a mason jar. Place the lid on the jar and shake it until the milk is frothy (about 30 seconds).
This method works best with whole milk, but can also be used with lower-fat milks. The froth produced with this technique is large. It’s not ideal for making latte art, but it’ll do in a pinch.
Safety Tip: If your milk is really warm, hold the jar with a dish towel.
Use an Immersion Blender
Pour your milk into a tall, narrow container. Holding the immersion blender at the bottom of the container, turn it on and slowly move it up until all the milk is frothy.
This process works really well, but we don’t recommend it because it’s a real mess! The blender spits the milk all over the place, and if your container isn’t deep enough, it will overflow all over (been there done that).
So if you do decide to try this technique, make sure to use a big pot with plenty of depth! It’s that simple. You don’t even need to heat the milk before.
This method can be used with any type of milk.
If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can use a regular blender.
Blender method:
Pour milk into the blender and blend on medium until frothy.
This method is really easy and creates a nice foam, but it does require that you heat the milk first. Cover the lid of your blender with a dish towel to avoid hot milk flying all over your kitchen.
Pump Frother
If you have a pump frother, simply put the warm milk in the frothing chamber and pump away until it is frothy. Make sure to not fill it fully since the milk expands while being frothed.
This is our favorite method because it’s fast and easy, and it produces really good foam.
If you don’t have a pump frother, you can actually use a french press in the same way!
Frothing Wand
Pour your warm milk into a tall cup and place the frothing wand just below the surface of the milk.
Turn it on and move it up and down until the milk is frothy.
This produces excellent foam, and it’s also feasible to utilize your wand for other tasks such as whipping cream for cocoa or mixing small amounts of liquid ingredients. It’s also small, so it won’t take up much room in your cabinets.
Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s a great way to froth milk without an espresso machine!
These are all great methods for frothing milk without an espresso machine.
Remember, if you’re using the microwave or stovetop method, heat the milk until it is hot but not boiling.
If you’re using the blender method, cover the lid with a dish towel to avoid hot milk flying all over your kitchen.
And if you’re using a pump frother or frothing wand, make sure to not fill it too full since the milk expands while being frothed.
Now that you know how to froth milk without an espresso machine, you can make all sorts of delicious coffee drinks at home!
The possibilities are endless.
